Pastor Verne preaching from 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 on, “We Also Pray Always For You.” It is not surprising to discover the subject of prayer in the letters of the Apostle Paul. A life of prayer is expected according to God’s Word (1Thessalonans 5:17). Prayer is learned by praying, by meditating on Scripture, and by praying with others. And prayer is answered (Psalm 65:2). We’ll learn who we are praying to as seen in 1:1-2. We are praying to God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. God is identified as our Father, Who knows us and cares for us (Matthew 6:25-34). The Lord Jesus Christ is our Mediator and sympathetic High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16). The emphasis of 1:11-12 is what we are to be praying for. Three words describe the topics of our prayer requests: Worthiness, Working, and Witness. Worthiness is our suitable and appropriate manner of living that reflects the honor and worthiness of our God. This is the display of God in how we live. Working is the outworking of our faith in the power of God. Our actions and activities display the genuineness of our faith. And the witness we desire people to see is the glory and grace of God. While we are to pray about everything, may our prayers be focused on the worthiness of our God, the work God is doing in and through us, and the witness of God’s glory and grace.
