The Humble Joy of Peace
Philippians 4:6-7 are two of the most well-known Bible verses on the subject of prayer. The commands not to be anxious and to make our requests known to God are emphasized. There is a flow starting with anxiety, followed by prayer, which results with peace. This peace is God Himself, Who is the God of peace, Who then give that peace to us. Just as God surpasses all understanding, so does the peace He gives us. This peace is not an explanation, but an experience. Mark 4:35-41 brings us to the Sea of Galilee as Jesus and His disciples were crossing over and a great windstorm arose. The disciples woke up Jesus, Who was asleep on a pillow. They asked Him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” Then Jesus arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be calm.” This is like God’s peace. Yes, Jesus cares. And yes, Jesus speaks. And what does Jesus say? “Peace, be calm.” God has peace for His people even when there is a storm. May you know the God of peace in the gospel and in trusting in His plan and promises.
